Yes! You Can and Why You Should

I remember my very first client. At the end of our six sessions, she achieved her big dream. She got a job in a retail women's clothing store!

Maybe this is NOT your idea of a ‘big’ dream, but, coming from her small-town upbringing and living the life of a young wife and mother, this was, for her, a big dream. This was NOT about the job; it was about her attaining autonomy and a sense of power and accomplishment. She diligently overcame her fears and claimed a new level for herself.

Many, many, many clients later I find that no matter what the ‘level’ of the dream may be, the process of stepping out of where you are to get to a level you’ve not been before, is the same.
We all have a ‘set’ level of what and who we believe we are. If you want a better job or to leave your job, to find a partner or be divorced, lose weight, improve your finances, move, etc., there is a ‘next’ level you want that you probably have not experienced before.

The set of roadblocks each individual face may look different, but they can essentially be boiled down to fears to overcome. Most of the roadblocks standing between you now and you in your desired place are in your mind.

Realize ‘Comfortable’ is NOT the Goal
We are accustomed to where we are, even if it’s not great, familiar is tough to deliberately move away from. Fear keeps us from believing we can change/be different. And being comfortable has become our normal. The people that are the most ‘jazzed’ about life and themselves are doing things that make them uncomfortable on a regular basis. Feeling the fear and doing it anyway is how dreams are realized. Which leads me to…

Break It Down
Your dream should feel at least a bit daunting, or it isn’t going to change you and expand you for the better. Realize that you don’t have to do everything at once. Start small. Very, very small. Outline some broad steps you need to take in order to meet your goal. Break down those broad steps and then break them down again. Break them down to the point that doing one small action toward your goal each day feels easy.

Believe that it’s Possible
Looking around to see that others are doing what you want is a great way to believe that what you want is possible for you.

Do Something Radical
My first client’s very first step was hiring a Life Coach! In her world, this was a radical step. People where she was didn’t know what a Life Coach was. In order to get where you’ve not been before will require you to do things you haven’t done before.

Get Support
There will come a point in your journey, or maybe several points, where you will face doing something that will fire up all your fear alarms. You will again need to face the fear and do it anyway. It is so much easier to overcome fears and get out of your own way with support. My first client had to fill out a job application and show up for an interview—things that terrified her, but, she had me, someone who could guide her with tools that work and give support and encouragement through the process.

And Why You Should
Why should you put yourself through the stress and uncomfortableness of going for your dream or anything that will improve your life for the better? My first client doing her dream attainment not only improved and expanded herself, but she set an example for her children. And who knows how many countless women benefitted from her fashion advice in that retail clothing store?! You becoming and being your full self helps everyone.

How to Simply Do Better

Do you find yourself with less energy? More irritable? What about just generally enjoying your life less? It is so easy to spiral, very slowly and almost imperceptibly, into the vortex of ‘not enough’ thinking and behaving. It is almost impossible NOT to do this when you spend time watching t.v. or on social media where we’re constantly bombarded with information that is “Guaranteed to Improve Your Life.”

I very recently slid down into the ‘not enough’ vortex. When I checked in with my thoughts, I discovered a plethora of quite critical, self-improvement agendas happening up in my head.
If this is you, you may have success with this very quick way to feel and DO better!

A Thought Inventory
Sit down, right now in fact! And do a brain dump. Write out every thought you can catch in your head. No editing. No judging. The beginning might just be your grocery list and errands you have to run today, but if you keep going, and stay honest, you’ll probably get to the underneath thought layers and you may be surprised.

Now Follow Those Thoughts to Your Feelings
You’ve probably read this a thousand times or more. But it bears repeating because our persistent negative thoughts, unfortunately, keep repeating. Our thoughts produce feelings! If you’re anything like me, the underneath thoughts are ones of not doing enough, not doing things right and fears of what may or may not happen in my future. These were the thoughts causing my feelings of irritability and making me shrink from participating in my life. Read your thought list. Check in with your feelings.

Make Another List
I made a list of things that I’m doing right. I amazed myself with how awesome I am! Not bragging. Ok. Bragging. And why not?? If we’re going to entertain the ‘not enough’ thoughts, then we should be able to give the doing good thoughts at least the same air time.
Go ahead. Make your list. What are you doing right? Go. Write!
Check in. How do you feel now?

Forgive Yourself Relentlessly
Of course, we can always improve! I’m all about growth and expansion. As long as the improving doesn’t spiral down into ‘not enough-ness,’ like it did/does for me. For those times that you mess up or don’t measure up to the standard you’ve set for yourself, forgive yourself relentlessly! I took this  line from Glennon Doyle. When a person on her social media feed asked her how she can get over her, sometimes spectacular mess ups!, Glennon said she forgave herself relentlessly, and we should too. Forgiveness/atonement is an inside job. When we are compassionate toward ourselves, we realize we are human. Wonderfully imperfect, perfect humans. This translates directly into compassion toward others. Another awesome feeling/action.

Go Do Better
With my ‘things I’m doing right’ list, I got my ‘mojo’ back. I believe in myself again and it’s caused me to be better to myself and others.

Wonderful things happen when we feel good about ourselves. Better thoughts lead to better feelings which lead to better actions. Simple as that.

With your new focus on how awesome you are doing and the great feelings that brings, act on those feelings. Do something fun, kind, loving for yourself and/or someone else.

Send me an email telling me what you’re doing right!

On my journey back to wholeness I have explored many modalities and can honestly say the What Now Life Coaching session was one of the most illuminating (yet non-invasive) interactions I've had.

Jennifer used an interesting variety of tools to further guide me towards my "North Star" (soul's calling) and I walked away feeling grounded, comforted, validated and inspired.
