I talked to a lot of people today before I realized that I had yet to start a conversation cold. All of my contacts today were related to my work. I had a start point with everyone. Even the clerk at the post office – mailing for business; the checkout clerk – purchases for business - I had an already existing reason for conversation.
I went for my run. As I came to a crossroad, literally, trying to determine which way I wanted to return home, I saw a young guy standing at the bus stop, so I thought I would maybe attempt a conversation with him. As I approached I noticed he was wearing ear buds and as I got closer, he kept his gaze firmly averted. I felt a definite ‘do not disturb’ vibe, so I kept right on going. Further along the apparent bus route there stood a female and I thought “oh good, another chance.” But the bus retrieved her before I could get to her.
Facing the rest of the day in my home office, with no plans to see anyone other than people I know, I actually answered the phone knowing it was a telemarketer! She asked for a political party donation, I declined and then in an attempt at conversation, I asked her where she was calling from. She just said “goodbye” and hung up. 20 minutes later another telemarketer called. He asked for someone, I replied they weren’t here. I asked the male telemarketer his name and he replied that he would call back some other time.
I didn’t complete the task as I set it out, but I became more aware of those around me than I was yesterday and answering a telemarketer call with my own agenda certainly took the wind out of their sails/sales! That was interesting. Today I noticed that I am connected to a lot of people in a lot of ways. I feel pleased.
