PATIENCE - I went very slowly. I brought out the vacuum every day and placed it close to my cat-Jefferson. Occasionally I brushed him. Eventually I turned the vacuum on while he was near. He got to leave any time he wanted. Some days he'd allow a brush or two, some days none.
PERSISTENCE - I kept at it, but I let him lead. As soon as he was done, I let him walk away. I was never discouraged. I would just set up again the next day.
REWARDS - lots and lots of rewards! treats, praise and LOVE. In the beginning I put out cat treats (the ones he rarely gets) every time I brought out the vacuum. He got to eat as many as he wanted around the vacuum. Then he got a treat when he allowed me to put the brush on him while the vacuum wasn't on. Then he got treats each time he allowed the brush while the vacuum was on, but if he only allowed it for one stroke, I let him walk away. I never chased after him. I never scolded him. I praised him ridiculously! He got treats each and every time I vacuumed him until evenutally he would just allow me to vacuum him. Some days he doesn't, but most of the time he enjoys it.
Show up. Be patient. Be encouraged and encouraging, Be persistent. Stop AS SOON you've had enough. Give yourself lots and lots of praise, love and rewards!
