We start at a young age being taught that life is full of drudgery. We ‘have to’ go to school, we ‘have to’ get a job, we ‘have to’ be ‘nice, good’ people. We are taught that in order to do all of these ‘have to’s’ we must stuff down our individual desires, conform and get on. By the time we’re adults, we are accustomed to feeling like life is a grind. We accept that life isn’t supposed to be wonderful all the time. That is just sad.
What if we emphasized that school is a big pool of opportunity to explore lots of different things to find out how we are specifically wired? What if we were taught that our grades were just a measure of what was of interest to us and not as a measure of our intelligence or worth? What if, instead of lots of money being the measure of success, it was joy, happiness and creativity? (Spoiler; if you are working at something that is causing joy, happiness and creativity, usually lots of money shows up!) What if instead of trying to overcome our weaknesses, we concentrated on leveraging our strengths? (See: Strengths and Weaknesses; Your Friends)
I clarified further with my lovely family member; if you are loving what you do, you are your best self and you, as your best self is what’s best for everyone. If you are constantly pursuing things, volunteering for things, working at things that you hate, your energy is drained. You, therefore, are not running on all cylinders, and will not be producing full out. Not only that, you will not be tapped into your creativity. This is not good for you or for me. Your creativity vein is where you are ‘lit up’ with enjoyment, engagement and delight. You, happy and creative is the best service you have to offer to your employer, your community and your family/friends.
As a Certified Life Coach, I hereby grant you permission to pursue that which lights you up; to fully pursue your passion. I hereby give you permission to stop pursuing, volunteering for, working at things that you hate.
