Grief (Sad) Here
Part Three: Anger (Mad!)
Genuine anger means that something your true self needs is absent or something your true self can’t tolerate is present.
Managing Anger Options
1) Change yourself.
2) Change the situation.
Authentic anger is triggered whenever we perceive injustice and it is the fuel that gives us the strength and energy to do something about it.
What to Do When You Are Angry
If you find yourself feeling angry, facing a situation that must be changed, here are some guidelines:
- Burn off ‘hot’ anger. Anger is the fight part of our survival response of fight or flight. Physical movement is the best way to use the energy of rage constructively.
- Once your rage has cooled, use your energy to confront the one or the thing responsible for your anger. Say exactly what is bothering you and why. *The saying part of it is important for you. *
- Say exactly what you would like done. What is missing? What is present that shouldn’t be? No one can meet your demands if they don’t know what they are. Describe calmly—no whining.
- Spell out what you’ll do if nothing changes and follow through. Think carefully about what you are willing to follow through on.
Anger Burns Inside or Outside; You Choose
Repressed anger destroys from the inside out. It will burn slowly (depression) or explode (rage). When it is misdirected it is destructive. Cared for and properly used, anger can light a path to progress and keep danger at bay.
Well used anger lies at the heart and soul of making the world a better, more humane place.
